Viking Plaza sale postponed again

The pending sheriff's sale of the Viking Plaza Mall in Alexandria has been postponed again by its lender, mall manager Scott Snitker said this week.

First set for June 14, the sale was postponed to Friday, July 20, and is now set for Thursday, Aug. 23, he said.

The mall asked to postpone the first sale date to buy time to refinance with someone else, which the lenders initially refused, he said. However, a new appraisal of the mall reassured the lenders that Viking Plaza could refinance and pay back its original loan, so the lenders agreed to the delay, Snitker said, adding that mall owners are still working on a refinancing deal.

This time, he said it wasn't the mall that requested the delay but the lender, so it could sort through legal issues.

Meanwhile, Snitker is continuing to seek tenants for the mall. He is currently in talks with four different corporate entities about filling vacancies, he said.

The Alexandria mall has lost one anchor store, JCPenney, while another anchor, Herberger's, is on the verge of closing. Bon Ton, Herberger's parent company, announced that all of its stores were going out of business by Aug. 31.

Snitker said he manages 14 malls, and he is seeing empty spots beginning to fill up with fitness centers, military recruiting stations, chiropractors and entertainment venues.

"For two to three years, we were 100 percent full and we will be again," he said Wednesday of the Viking Plaza Mall. "It's going to look different."
