Community Education

Upcoming community education classes will cover writing a book, massage and lefse making, among other topics.

Rock cutting and polishing

Make your own polished rocks for setting into metal wire wrapping, or just for admiring. In this class you will learn how to cut and polish rocks into beautiful pieces using the lapidary equipment at the studio. Bring your own rocks or use what is provided. Choose from two sessions in Lorsung Art Studio: 6-9 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 7, or 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28.

Color BLAST — Club real fun

Pick your colors and create a dyed masterpiece, and all supplies will be provided. This class uses fun but messy fabric dye and paints, so students should wear their oldest clothes. 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, in Discovery Middle School, Room D250.

Cut and styling

Participants will learn about everyday haircut and style options that work for them. All participants will receive individual consultations and one will receive a haircut. Class size is limited to seven for individualized instruction. 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Ella's Salon.

Homemade lefse

Learn techniques for making lefse in this demonstration/tasting class. The instructor will prepare the ingredients prior to class, but will go over the recipe and show the equipment used in preparation. Also on tap are rolling and frying demonstrations, and each student will have the chance to roll and taste the finished product. 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8, at Discovery Middle School, Room D248.

Old is new again

Chalk Paint Workshop: no sanding, no stripping, no priming. This hands-on class will take you from start to finish using simple steps to successfully refinish a piece of your own furniture with chalk-mineral furniture paint. Fee includes choice of one paint, glaze and starter paint brush. Bring a piece of furniture under 40 pounds that you can carry by yourself, such as an end table, night stand, chair, stool or mirror. Choose from two classes at Hello Beautiful: 1-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, or 6-8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19.

Christmas custom pallet painting

Create a custom sign, "Believe" or "Merry," on reclaimed wood. Students will take home a completed project. All supplies are included. Final project size may vary. Plan for approximately 16x20. Indicate your design choice on registration. 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at Discovery Middle School, Room D253, the Art Room.

Copper enameling

Sprinkle powdered glass on copper to create a simple, two-disc pendant. All materials are supplied.

6-8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Potomac Bead Company.

Introduction to wrestling

This free introduction to the sport of wrestling is designed for kids in grades 6-8 to learn about the rules, scoring, match sequence, basic techniques and sportsmanship. Alexandria Youth Wrestling registration information will be available at class. 3:30-5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, Discovery Middle School cafeteria.

American Heart Association CPR and first aid

Wish you knew how to use CPR and AEDs to save lives, or want to know what to do if

someone is choking? This class is geared toward helping adults with disabilities build these basic first-aid skills. Cost includes a family and friends student manual. Class size is limited. 6-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Discovery Middle School, Room D244.
