Larry Kittelson, 80, of Starbuck died after he experienced a medical problem while driving on County Road 82 west of the Douglas County Fairgrounds in Alexandria on Thursday, Sept. 13.

Witnesses told police officers that Kittelson was slumped over the steering wheel before he left the road and crashed into a pole at about 2:40 p.m.

Alexandria police officers were on scene within minutes and began life-saving efforts, using CPR and an automated external defibrillator, according to Officer Keith Melrose.

North Ambulance arrived minutes later and took Kittelson to Alomere Health in Alexandria. He was later transferred to St. Cloud Hospital and died on Saturday. Funeral services are pending with Starbuck Funeral Home.

Alexandria Fire Department and Alexandria Light and Power were called to the scene. Firefighters responded because a passerby reported smoke coming from the vehicle but it turned out to be steam, according to Fire Chief Jeff Karrow.
