Charlotte R. Mickelson
Charlotte Rosella Truax was born August 26, 1921 near Bertha, MN, the daughter of Frank and Nettie (Russell) Truax. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school near Wrightstown. Following her schooling she helped her parents on the farm and worked as a housekeeper.
On October 30, 1939 Charlotte was united in marriage to Henry Mickelson. The couple was blessed with five children. The couple farmed for a time before moving to Oregon. After two years in Oregon, where Charlotte worked as a housekeeper, they returned to Minnesota and made their home near Wadena. Charlotte began a career in the newspaper industry. With the backing of the Merickel family, Charlotte broke the gender barrier and became a successful linotype operator for the Wadena Pioneer Journal.
In 1960 Charlotte and her family moved to Alexandria, MN. Charlotte took a job as a linotype operator for the Echo Press. She worked as a linotype operator until technology made the work obsolete. She continued with the Echo Press as a proofreader until age seventy-five. She continued working part time in hand bindery for the Echo Press. Charlotte loved her work and loved working with the people at the newspaper.
Charlotte was a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church where she volunteered her time for church activities and events. She also served as a volunteer at Douglas County Hospital.
Charlotte enjoyed spending time reading and doing crochet work. She shared much of what she crocheted with family and friends. She enjoyed many travels throughout the United States with her family. She took several bus trips with seniors and attended the Hostfest in Minot, ND.
Hospitality was important to Charlotte; she welcomed people and enjoyed visiting with them. Her hospitality included feeding her friends and family. She was an excellent cook and baker. Her family loved her molasses and date filled cookies and knew they would be very well fed on all holidays and family gatherings. All of her family; her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren, along with her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews were always special to Charlotte.
On Thursday, July 5, 2018 Charlotte died at the age of ninety-six years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Mickelson; brothers, Melvin and Morris Truax; and sister, Laura Barnhart. Charlotte is survived by her children, Larry Mickelson and wife, Jan, of West Fargo, ND, Jan Neuerburg and husband, Norman, of Clinton, MO, Mary Fahlin and husband, Norman, of White Bear Lake, MN, Randy Mickelson and wife, Laura, of Laguna Vista, TX, and Jake Mickelson and fianc, Emily Molosky, of Hudson, WI; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-one great grandchildren; ten great great grandchildren; brothers, Oliver Truax and wife Marie, of Deer Creek, MN and Allen Truax and wife, Edie, of Lincoln, NE; sisters, Loma Snell of Hugo, MN and Norma Snell Durant of Centerville, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2:30 PM Friday, July 13, 2018 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Reverend Don Wilke will officiate. Interment will follow in the Zion Cemetery near Bertha.
