Volleyball: Chargers fight but fall in three to 16-win Warriors
The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team jumped out of conference to take on a good Wheaton-Herman-Norcross team on Monday and fell in three sets to the 16-4 Warriors.
Wheaton had to fight for things in every set. The Warriors took the first and third by 25-22 and 25-23 scores, respectively. They sandwiched a 25-19 win in the second set in between those.
"Tonight, we were hoping for a few things," B-E head coach Kelly Olson said. "We wanted to not only play hard but make less errors. At times we did both of those things. Each set was back and forth, but we just couldn't quite hang on at the end of the sets."
Olson said the Chargers led near the end in both the second and third sets before some errors allowed the Warriors to escape with the wins.
"Wheaton did a good job of finding the runs at the end to finish us off," Olson said. "It was a back-and-forth match that ended in Wheaton's favor each set. Tough one to lose, especially considering we could have given them a better fight had we just stayed within ourselves and the system. Errors cost a chance to win."
The Chargers (11-15) got 14 kills from freshman Bailey Schaefer and 11 from senior Allie Satterlie. Senior Emily Bukkila had a team-leading 11 digs and three aces, while junior setter Madison Quinn finished with 20 assists.
"On the plus side, I think we passed the ball pretty well," Olson said. "We covered better than we have been, and we had some quality touches blocking the ball. But in the end, we can't sugarcoat a 3-0 loss. We will have to play smarter volleyball if we want to continue playing after next week."
The Chargers have one more regular season game when Ashby comes to town for Senior Night on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
Playoffs start on Oct. 23. Brandon-Evansville is currently sitting as the eighth seed in the Minnesota-scores.net QRF standings.
