Girls cross country: Alex, WCA show off their depth in Fergus

Two local girls cross country programs came back from Fergus Falls and the John Hermes Invite on Thursday with top-two finishes.

Alexandria ran away with the meet, scoring just 24 points behind five top-10 finishes. West Central Area grabbed second place with 68 points and Fergus Falls rounded out the top three with 69.

The Cardinals have shown off their depth all season by having different girls lead the way at meets, and it was Caitlin Bright’s turn on Thursday. She took second with a time of 20:04.5, just in front of teammate Aleah Miller, who finished third in 20:05.1.

Bethany Miller was fourth in a time of 20:16.9 and Jaelyn Miller was fifth in 20:24.8. Heavyn Bordak (10th, 21:15.1) finished off the team scoring and Amanda Bittmann (20th, 22:21.9) rounded out the lineup.

“The girls had nine season-bests and are learning a lot about racing and are gaining confidence,” Alexandria head coach Travis Hochhalter said of his girls program as a whole. “With a huge week of practice, it was great to see progress towards our goals.”

West Central Area was led by Lexi Bright in seventh place. She finished in a time of 20:50.1, while Teagen Nelson added a ninth-place finish in 21:08.1. Bryn Fernholz (12th, 21:21.3), Ella Van Kempen (13th, 21:27.6) and Kennedy Porter (27th, 23:04.6) finished off the scoring, while Terina Blascyk also ran for the Knights and was 32nd in a time of 23:38.
