Deer report October 30: A reminder that it's all about the food
The last couple of days have been a reminder that it’s all about the food.
I sat in two of my better spots on the mornings of Oct. 29 and 30. I didn’t see a single deer in six hours on Monday morning and saw just three young bucks this morning.
I would guess that has something to do with the crop rotation. These two areas were loaded with deer a year ago, but the fields surrounding them were in corn. Even when that gets harvested, there tends to be more waste grain for deer to feed on than there is with beans.
The beans here now have been combined for a few weeks, and there is still a lot of standing corn left. My best encounters this week have all been around that corn. That’s where I will shift my attention back to if I can get the right winds to work with.
Don’t be discouraged if you have standing corn left in the fields. Hunt it. That’s where the does are going to be, so the bucks are going to follow. I have seen a lot of activity directly around the corn with deer moving in and out of it throughout the day.
