Volleyball: Osakis fends off Pierz in five for eighth straight win

Tianna Stanek

The Osakis volleyball team has been tested with tight matches in three of the last four, and the Silverstreaks have passed every one of those tests.

Osakis won a third match in five sets during that time span as the Silverstreaks (12-8) knocked off Pierz (5-14) to win their eighth straight contest.

“Pierz came in tonight ready to go,” Osakis head coach Kirsten Wessel said. “I told the girls before the match that Pierz is always very athletic and will field a good team.”

The Pioneers showed that in the first as they won 25-20 to take an early advantage. Osakis bounced back to win 25-23 in the second. That’s how things went all night as Pierz won the third 25-16 and Osakis forced a fifth set by taking the fourth, 25-13. The Silverstreaks had to fend off the Pioneers in the fifth, but did so with a 15-13 victory.

“Game four, we dug deep and came back strong and took control the entire game,” Wessel said. “Our defense seems to really be clicking together at times, and they meshed well together. Game five, we took an early, big lead, but let that slip back into a tie game at 9-9. But we kept pushing through, staying strong and making smart offensive choices and finished with the win.   It was nice to see some players coming off the bench and make a difference in the game for us.”

Abby Randall, Brooke Pfeffer and Liz Drevlow all contributed off the bench, and Osakis continued to spread the ball around up front. Elli Clasemann had 30 assists. Tianna Stanek led the attack with 11 kills, but Kylie Anderson (nine kills), Jacey Larson (eight kills), Laynee Hartshorn (eight kills) and Maddie Johanson (seven kills) all contributed.

Osakis will host its final home match of the regular season tonight, Tuesday, when a 3-15 Upsala team comes to town at 7:30.
